A childhood accident nearly ended Donte Whitner's career before it even began
In short: Born in Cleveland, Donte Whitner overcame a devastating childhood accident that left him with 30 leg fractures and doctors doubting he would ever walk again. He defied those odds to become a standout NFL safety, known for his punishing hits and a brief, headline-grabbing attempt to legally change his name.
At age six, Donte Whitner was struck by a car while chasing a loose football in his hometown of Cleveland. The impact was so severe it caused up to 30 fractures in his legs, leading medical professionals to warn that he might never walk again. Following three months in a full-body cast, he made a remarkable recovery that eventually propelled him to Glenville High School and later to the Ohio State Buckeyes. During his collegiate tenure from 2003 to 2005, he excelled as a defensive back and safety, notably helping his team defeat Notre Dame in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl.
Whitner entered the professional ranks as the eighth overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft, selected by the Buffalo Bills. His professional journey was marked by significant milestones, including a 76-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2009 and a career-high 18-tackle game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2010. After joining the San Francisco 49ers in 2011, he gained notoriety for his aggressive style of play, particularly a high-impact hit on New Orleans Saints running back Pierre Thomas during the 2011 playoffs that forced a critical fumble.
The physical nature of his play occasionally drew scrutiny, leading to fines from the league. In 2013, following a fine for a hit on St. Louis Rams receiver Chris Givens, Whitner famously attempted to change his legal surname from "Whitner" to "Hitner." Although he initiated the process, he ultimately withdrew the request after failing to appear in court as required by a judge. His career continued with stints at the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Redskins, concluding a decade-long professional trajectory that began with a draft selection that made him the first player ever introduced with the iconic NFL draft chime.
