The teenager who played through an exam crisis to debut
In short: In 2009, a teenage forward had to choose between his school exams and a professional football debut. When Bournemouth faced a severe injury crisis and financial restrictions, manager Eddie Howe made a call that would launch a career defined by prolific scoring across the English pyramid.
Jayden Stockley's professional journey began under extraordinary circumstances at AFC Bournemouth. In 2009, while still a student at Lytchett Minster School, manager Eddie Howe called up the 16-year-old to the first team due to an injury crisis and a transfer block caused by debts owed to HM Revenue and Customs. The move was so significant that Howe had to contact Stockley's school to secure permission for him to miss his exam preparations. Bournemouth's second youngest ever participant, Stockley first appeared on 6 October 2009 while facing Northampton Town. While he signed a five-year contract in November of that year, his path was marked by a nomadic loan system. He spent years moving between clubs like Dorchester Town, Accrington Stanley, and Luton Town, often seeking game time as Bournemouth underwent a rapid rise through the leagues—a period Stockley noted meant he frequently had to "sit and watch promotion after promotion." His career eventually found its most consistent success in League Two.
After a stint in the Scottish Premiership with Aberdeen, he joined Exeter City in 2017 for a club-record fee of £100,000. He became a prolific talisman there, scoring 51 goals in just 97 games. By January 2019, he had surpassed every other player across England's top four divisions in terms of league goals during the 2018 calendar year.
Stockley's career is a study in professional persistence. From being demoted to Bournemouth's development squad to becoming a top-scorer for clubs like Charlton Athletic and Fleetwood Town, he navigated various levels of the pyramid. He eventually joined AFC Wimbledon in August 2026, continuing a career defined by his ability to find the back of the net regardless of the division.
