The first five-star recruit to choose a non-Power Five school
In short: In 2018, Ed Oliver shattered the traditional recruiting pipeline. Despite being ranked among the nation's elite and receiving offers from every powerhouse program in the country, he chose to commit to the University of Houston. This move fundamentally challenged the hierarchy of college football scouting.
Before committing to Houston, Ed Oliver was a consensus five-star recruit out of Westfield High School in Houston, Texas. Because he was a top-tier prospect, Alabama, Florida, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M all sought to sign him. Oliver joined the Cougars as the initial ESPN five-star recruit to pledge allegiance to an institution beyond those leading leagues. He previously played for Westfield High School in Houston. During his senior year there, he recorded eight sacks and eighty-three tackles.
Oliver's transition to the collegiate level was immediate and decorated. As a true freshman in 2016, he started all 12 regular-season games for Houston, recording 60 tackles and five sacks. His dominance earned him the Bill Willis Trophy, making him the first freshman in history to receive the honor. During his 2017 sophomore campaign, he earned a spot on the Walter Camp All-America first team plus the Outland Trophy for best interior lineman. His success was built on a strong high school foundation where his team went eleven–one into the playoffs. He also earned honors as an All-Rookie Team selection after his debut season.
His professional trajectory began with a high-profile entry into the NFL. Despite Todd McShay predicting a No. 1 overall ranking in the 2019 draft, the Buffalo Bills took Oliver at the ninth spot during that same year's selection process. He signed a four-year rookie contract worth $19.7 million in May 2019. Since joining the Bills, he has evolved into a versatile defensive tackle, notably recording a career-high 9.5 sacks during the 2023 season and leading his team with three forced fumbles in 2024. He signed a four-year extension worth $68 million in June 2023. Furthermore, he was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for a standout performance against the Lions.
