From a small video store to the screens of Australia
In short: Before becoming a mainstay of Australian television and radio, Ed Kavalee spent eight and a half years working in a small video store. Today, the comedian and presenter is a familiar face on Network 10's 'Have You Been Paying Attention?' and a veteran of the Australian media landscape.
Born on 30 June 1979, Ed Kavalee has built a diverse career spanning radio, television, and film. His early professional years included a long stint in a video store starting at age fourteen, followed by roles in radio promotions and Theatresports. His television breakthrough came shortly before his graduation from Screenwise, when he joined the ensemble cast of the improvised comedy show 'Thank God You're Here' in 2006.
Kavalee's radio career is marked by both significant successes and controversy. In 2006, he joined the ratings success 'Get This' on Triple M with Tony Martin and Richard Marsland. Despite a devoted fanbase, the program was axed by Austereo after two years, eventually finishing in November 2007. He later held prominent breakfast roles on Nova 100 and 2Day FM, including the 'Hughesy & Kate' show and 'The Morning Crew'.
In the realm of film and television, Kavalee has demonstrated significant creative agency. He starred in, co-wrote, and co-produced the comedy film 'Scumbus', which was shot in just 11 days and aired on Channel 10 in November 2012. He also wrote and directed his own satirical film, 'Border Protection Squad', which was released on iTunes in 2015. More recently, in 2025, he competed alongside his wife, Tiffiny Hall, on the ninth season of 'The Amazing Race Australia'.
Kavalee's personal history is equally complex. Following his World War II service, his father, Charles Keith Hyland, relocated to Bangkok and set up a facility for processing duck feathers in Vietnam, where the Viet Cong jailed him during 1968. Kavalee did not learn his father's identity until his death in 1989.
