From literacy struggles to AFL legend: the remarkable journey of Eddie Betts
In short: At 17, Eddie Betts entered the AFL with the reading and writing ability of a six-year-old. Today, he is a record-breaking forward, a celebrated author, and a mentor for Indigenous Australian youth, proving that a difficult start does not dictate one's ultimate ceiling.
Eddie Betts’ rise to stardom was marked by significant personal hurdles. Growing up in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Betts faced severe educational disadvantages; he was often the only Aboriginal child in his class and struggled with literacy. This lack of schooling meant that, upon entering the AFL, his reading and writing skills were equivalent to those of a six- or seven-year-old. To overcome this, he eventually enrolled in literacy and numeracy classes during his second year at Carlton Football Club.
On the field, Betts became one of the most decorated forwards in Australian rules football. Between 2005 and 2021, he played 350 games and kicked 640 goals for Carlton and Adelaide. He is particularly renowned for his spectacular scoring, winning the AFL Goal of the Year four times (2015, 2015, 2017, and 2019) and holding the record for the most career goal assists with 318.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Betts has become a prominent advocate for Indigenous Australians. He founded the Eddie Betts Foundation to support youth through sport, education, and mentoring. He also wrote the 'Lil' Homies' series to boost children's reading confidence, while his autobiography, 'The Boy from Boomerang Crescent', earned the Social Impact Book of the Year award at the 2023 Australian Book Industry Awards. His life and battle against racism have even inspired cultural contributions, such as Paul Kelly's 2021 song, 'Every Step of the Way'.
