The reluctant pitcher who mastered the art of the strikeout
In short: He didn't even want to pitch. Growing up in Puerto Rico, Edwin Díaz was a center fielder until his father insisted he try the mound. Today, he is one of the most dominant closers in baseball history, defined by a high-velocity fastball and an unprecedented ability to dominate batters.
Edwin Díaz’s ascent to MLB stardom began with a transition from the outfield to the mound, driven by parental persuasion. Following his third-round selection by the Seattle Mariners during the 2012 MLB draft, Díaz rapidly emerged as a once-in-a-generation player. During 2016, just following his first major league appearance, he broke the Mariners' record by striking out 11 batters in a row, beating the 10-outout benchmark previously set by Hall of Famer Randy Johnson.
His dominance is characterized by a high-strikeout rate, averaging 14.5 strikeouts per nine innings through March 2026—one of the highest rates for a reliever in major league history. This efficiency is powered by a sidearm delivery featuring a 97.7 mph four-seam fastball and an 89.4 mph slider. His ability to close games earned him numerous accolades, including being named the American League Reliever of the Year in 2018 and the National League Reliever of the Year in 2022 and 2025.
Despite his success, Díaz's career has been marked by dramatic fluctuations and physical setbacks. In 2019, he experienced a significant performance collapse, with his ERA+ dropping from 210 to 74. He has also faced major injuries, including a full-thickness patellar tendon tear in 2023 that sidelined him for eight months. Nevertheless, his impact remains profound; he holds the record for the most Reliever of the Month honors, with 10 total awards split evenly between the AL and NL.
