The Brazilian midfielder who navigated a fake passport to reach the top
In short: Edu Gaspar’s journey to the Premier League was nearly derailed by a fraudulent document. After discovering he held a fake Portuguese passport, he had to rely on his Italian lineage to secure his move to England. His career eventually saw him become a historic figure for both Arsenal and the Brazilian national team.
Edu's path to Arsenal was complicated by a bureaucratic hurdle in 2000. While the club initially intended to sign him, the move was paused when it was discovered his Portuguese passport was counterfeit. He eventually secured a legitimate European Union passport through his father's Italian ancestry, allowing him to sign for Arsenal on January 16, 2001, for a fee of £6 million. This transition was also marked by personal tragedy, as his sister was killed in a car accident shortly after his arrival in England.
Despite a difficult start—including an own goal against Middlesbrough and a brief debut against Leicester City—Edu became a cornerstone of the 2003–04 Arsenal side. He was a key part of the squad that went 49 games unbeaten, a feat that included the entire Premier League season without a loss. During this peak period, he reached a career high of 48 appearances and 7 goals in all competitions, notably scoring in a 5–1 Champions League victory over Inter Milan in November 2003.
Edu made history as the first Brazilian player to win the Premier League title. Beyond his club success, he represented Brazil from 2004 to 2005, helping the nation secure victories in the Copa América and the FIFA Confederations Cup. He notably scored a penalty in the 2004 Copa América shootout against Argentina. Following his retirement in 2010, he transitioned into leadership, serving as Arsenal's first technical director and later as their first sporting director before moving into various international roles.
His influence on the sport extended into management and media. He served as the general coordinator for the Brazil national team from 2016 to 2019 and was featured in the Amazon docuseries 'All or Nothing' for both Arsenal and Brazil. Most recently, he joined the Board of Directors for Levski Sofia in September 2026, continuing his transition from the pitch to the boardroom.
