The German football pioneer that revolutionized the modern jersey sponsor
In short: Long before global brands dominated the pitch, a German club used a clever loophole to change sports marketing forever. From championship glory and Cold War tragedies to a controversial bribery scandal, the history of Eintracht Braunschweig is a masterclass in resilience and innovation.
Founded in 1895, Eintracht Braunschweig was a cornerstone of early German football, helping to establish the DFB in 1900. The club enjoyed a golden era during the 1960s and 1970s, most notably winning the Bundesliga title in the 1966–67 season under manager Helmut Johannsen. That legendary squad set a defensive benchmark, conceding only 27 goals—a record that stood for over two decades.
The club's history is marked by both innovation and intrigue. In 1973, Braunschweig became the first Bundesliga side to feature a sponsor logo on its kit, displaying Jägermeister. To bypass league bans on advertising, they even briefly redesigned their crest to mimic the liquor brand's logo. This move, which brought in 100,000 DM, fundamentally altered the economics of professional football.
However, the club's path has not been without darkness. The 1971 Bundesliga scandal revealed players were accepting 40,000 DM specifically to increase their competitive effort, rather than to lose. The club also faced personal tragedies, such as the 1968 car accident that killed forward Jürgen Moll and his wife, and the 1983 death of Lutz Eigendorf, which was later revealed to be a Stasi assassination.
Despite periods of financial crisis and oscillating between the second and third tiers, the 'Lions' have maintained a fierce identity. Whether contesting the Lower Saxony derby against Hannover 96 or navigating the complexities of the modern league system, the club remains a symbol of enduring regional pride.
