The Elders of the Universe are the last survivors of extinct, ancient cosmic races.
In short: Each Elder of the Universe is the final remnant of a vanished species, possessing potentially infinite lifespans driven by singular, fanatical obsessions. From cosmic game players to obsessive collectors, these beings wield the Power Primordial—remnants of the Big Bang—to pursue their interests across billions of years of existence.
The Elders of the Universe are not traditional cosmic entities but survivors of extinct races who discovered that their longevity depends entirely on maintaining a will to live. This necessity drives them to pursue specific, fanatical obsessions, ranging from the Grandmaster’s strategic contests to the Collector’s preservation of artifacts and life forms. While they possess varying degrees of cosmic power, their true strength often lies in the unrivaled expertise they have cultivated in their chosen fields over billions of years.
Their power is rooted in the Power Primordial, a remnant of the Big Bang that permeates the universe. This energy allows for feats like molecular restructuring, teleportation, and physical augmentation. However, how they utilize this power varies; some, like the Champion or the Runner, integrate it directly into their pursuits, while others, such as the Gardener, may treat it as secondary to their aesthetic or intellectual goals. Their history is marked by complex power struggles, including a failed attempt to destroy the cosmic entity Galactus and various contests involving Earth’s heroes.
The group is not a monolithic organization but a loose collection of individuals, with some estimates suggesting there are around a thousand such beings. Their ranks include figures like the Astronomer, who chronicles celestial events, and the Obliterator, who hunts sentient life as a sport. Membership is defined by their status as the last of their kind, a criteria that even includes entities like Ego the Living Planet. Their motivations are often inscrutable, driven by a need to stave off the existential boredom that accompanies an effectively immortal life.
