A locomotive forged in the desert to power Texas soccer
In short: El Paso Locomotive FC didn't just appear; it was engineered through a deliberate branding process that fused regional identity with industrial imagery. From its 2018 inception to becoming a perennial playoff contender, the club has navigated pandemic shifts and coaching transitions to establish itself as a cornerstone of West Texas sports.
The club's visual identity was a calculated choice made in October 2018. The 'Locomotive' brand emerged after beating out several other finalists, including Lagartos and Estrellas. Its crest is deeply rooted in local geography and architecture, featuring the silhouette of the Franklin Mountains and a design inspired by Mission Style buildings. The team's desert setting is grounded by a palette comprising High Noon Sun, Desert Dusk blue, and West Texas Sky blue. In terms of performance, El Paso quickly established itself as a competitive force in the USL Championship. After debuting in 2019 under head coach Mark Lowry, the team reached the Western Conference finals in two consecutive years (2019 and 2020). Despite the logistical hurdles of the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced an altered four-team group format in 2020, the club maintained its momentum. By 2021, they were recognized as the most successful club in Texas, securing both the inaugural Copa Tejas Shield and the Copa Tejas Trophy. The team's journey has been defined by significant leadership turnover and geographic rivalry. Following the departure of Lowry in late 2021, the club cycled through coaches John Hutchinson—who returned to Australia after one season—and Brian Clarhaut. While the 2024 season saw a difficult start leading to coaching changes in May, the club remains a primary regional rival to New Mexico United and FC Juárez, continuing its residency at Southwest University Park.
