How Shinedown’s eighth studio album conquered the hard rock charts
In short: Before its official announcement, lead singer Brent Smith hinted that the songs were already written. Following a period of heavy singles releases, the album Ei8ht arrived to claim the top spot on the Billboard charts, proving the band's enduring momentum.
The journey toward Shinedown's eighth studio album, stylized as Ei8ht, began much earlier than its May 29, 2026, release date. In a 2023 interview, lead singer Brent Smith revealed that the material was already composed prior to the release of Planet Zero. While Smith initially suggested a 2024 release, the album's rollout spanned much of 2025 and 2026, driven by a steady stream of singles including "Three Six Five" and "Dance, Kid, Dance," which debuted in January 2025. The rollout also featured several promotional tracks, such as "Burning Down the Disco," "At the Bottom," and "Dizzy." Additionally, the band released the single "Young Again" as part of the six official singles from the project.
The production of the album maintained a consistent creative partnership between the band and bassist Eric Bass. Working out of Big Animal Studio in Charleston, South Carolina, Bass served as producer and mixer. This marked the third time Bass handled a Shinedown studio project, following the work done on Attention Attention and Planet Zero. His role was expansive, encompassing everything from engineering and programming to orchestral and string arrangements. The recording process was supported by Eric Wayne Rickert, who provided engineering assistance. Bass's multifaceted contribution to the album's sound also included work as a bass and guitar technician.
Upon its release via Atlantic Records, Ei8ht achieved significant commercial success, topping the Billboard Top Hard Rock Albums chart during its debut week with 38,000 equivalent units sold in the United States. Critical reception was also positive; the album earned a weighted average score of 75 out of 100 on Metacritic, based on five critic reviews. The album's complex sonic landscape was further enriched by Dave Bassett, who contributed vocal production, additional instrumentation, and synthesizers across various tracks. The album's musical depth was further enhanced by Dave Bassett, who played piano and lap steel guitar on specific tracks. He also provided backing vocals and synthesizer programming for the record.
