In short: Before she led MI5 through the era of global Islamist terrorism, Eliza Manningham-Buller was a schoolteacher. Her transition from education to espionage highlights a career defined by high-stakes counter-terrorism, uncovering double agents, and navigating the complex geopolitical landscape of the late 20th century.

Manningham-Buller joined the Security Service (MI5) in 1974 after three years of teaching at Queen's Gate School. Her career was marked by a focus on counter-terrorism, both domestic and international. It is reported that she belonged to a group of just five individuals who knew Oleg Gordievsky—the KGB rezidentura's deputy head in London—acted as a double agent during the early 1980s. She also held rare knowledge regarding how Gordievsky exposed Michael Bettaney.

Her operational experience spanned continents and crises. While the first Gulf War occurred, she functioned as a high-ranking liaison for Washington's US intelligence community. Upon her return to the UK in 1992, she led a newly created section responsible for Irish republican terrorism on the British mainland, a role previously held by the Metropolitan Police. By 1993, she joined the Management Board, overseeing technical operations and surveillance before becoming Deputy Director-General in 1997.

In October 2002, Manningham-Buller became the second woman to serve as Director-General of MI5. During her tenure until April 2007, she oversaw a massive expansion of the Service—which nearly doubled in size—to counter the rising threat of Islamist terrorism, including the response to the July 7, 2005 London bombings. Following her retirement, she transitioned into public life as a cross-bench peer and has held various leadership roles at the Wellcome Trust and Imperial College.

Her influence extends beyond intelligence; she has served on the Science and Technology Committee and currently chairs a select committee on Social Mobility in the House of Lords. King Charles III named her Chancellor of the Order of the Garter in 2024, confirming her role as an influential person within British society.
