In short: In October 2008, after his club secured only five points from nine matches, Marko Nikolić stepped into the spotlight. Within days, he didn't just take the reins; he set a record that remains a landmark in Serbian football history.

Marko Nikoli<0xC2><0xA0>Nikolić’s ascent to management was rapid. After a playing career interrupted by injury, he transitioned from working with Rad's youth teams to the senior squad in 2008. Following the departure of Aleksandar Janjić on 26 October 2008, Nikolić took command. Just three days later, he achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest manager ever in the Serbian top flight, marking the milestone with a 1–0 victory over Vojvodina.

His early career was defined by both stability and sudden shifts. At Rad, he successfully navigated the club away from relegation and secured Europa League qualification by 23 May 2011, before leaving once his objectives were met. His subsequent journey took him through several prominent European clubs, including Vojvodina, Partizan, and the Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana. His tenure at Partizan was particularly notable for a remarkable 37-game unbeaten streak in both league and cup competitions, which eventually led to a domestic double.

Nikolić's career has also been marked by significant international movement and periods of controversy. While finding success in Hungary with Videoton—where he won the Nemzeti Bajnokság I—and in Russia with Lokomotiv Moscow and CSKA Moscow, he also faced disciplinary action. In 2016, a seven-match ban and a €1,500 fine were issued by the Slovenian FA following an incident involving a player. As of June 2026, Nikolić continues his career in the Greek Super League with AEK Athens, following a contract extension.

His recent years in Russia saw him recognized as the Russian Premier League Manager of the Month for both March and April 2025. Despite the highs of winning the Russian Cup with CSKA Moscow, his career remains a complex tapestry of rapid promotions, domestic titles, and sudden departures.
