The quarterback who became an accidental icon of beauty
In short: In 1998, Elvis Grbac was famously named one of People magazine's Sexiest Athletes. However, this prestigious recognition was actually a photographic blunder. A photographer, tasked with profiling the Chiefs' quarterback, accidentally captured images of Grbac instead of his rival, Rich Gannon, an error later confirmed by a magazine employee.
The error occurred during a photoshoot meant to highlight the Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback. However, a photographer, following instructions to profile the player, accidentally captured Grbac instead of Gannon. This mistake was later confirmed by an employee at People magazine, turning a professional error into a piece of NFL trivia.
Grbac's career was defined by both high-level efficiency and intense internal competition. During his time at the University of Michigan from 1989 to 1992, he was a dominant force, winning the Sammy Baugh Trophy in 1992 and setting school records for passing attempts (835), completions (522), yards (6,460), and touchdowns (71). He was also a two-time NCAA passing efficiency champion.
In the NFL, Grbac's tenure with the Chiefs was marked by a divisive quarterback controversy. During the 1997 season, Grbac started the first nine games before an injury led to Rich Gannon taking over. While the team won a division title, the decision to retain Grbac over Gannon drew retrospective criticism, especially as Gannon went on to achieve massive success with the Oakland Raiders.
Beyond the field, Grbac's professional life has been a mix of high-stakes contracts and local leadership. After a stint with the Baltimore Ravens—a period involving a $30 million contract—he transitioned into coaching and administration. His former school, Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School in Cleveland, later appointed him as head football coach and athletic director.
