The quarterback who refused to change positions and conquered the NFL
In short: In 1987, the New England Patriots drafted Rich Gannon with a plan to convert him into a running back. Gannon balked at the idea, choosing instead to fight his way through the ranks to become an NFL MVP and a Super Bowl starter.
Rich Gannon's journey from the University of Delaware to NFL stardom was defined by a refusal to conform to expectations. After a stellar collegiate career where he set 21 school records—including 7,432 yards of total offense—he entered the 1987 NFL draft. While the Patriots selected him in the fourth round, they intended to move him to the backfield or even wide receiver. Gannon resisted, leading to a trade to the Minnesota Vikings where he eventually established himself as a starter by 1992.
His career was a series of high-stakes transitions. After stints with the Vikings, Washington Redskins, and Kansas City Chiefs, Gannon found his greatest success with the Oakland Raiders. Joining the Raiders as a free agent in 1999 on a $16-million deal, he flourished under coach Jon Gruden's West Coast offense. Between 1999 and 2002, he achieved an unprecedented feat: four consecutive Pro Bowl selections and back-to-back Pro Bowl MVP awards in 2001 and 2002.
The pinnacle of his individual success came in 2002, when he was named the NFL Most Valuable Player. That season, he threw for 4,689 yards and led the Raiders to Super Bowl XXXVII. However, the Super Bowl provided a bittersweet conclusion; Gannon threw a record five interceptions in a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Though injuries eventually forced his retirement in 2005, Gannon transitioned into a long career as a prominent sports analyst for CBS Sports, serving the network for 16 years.
