The 220-pound underdog who toppled giants with a 'fiery' spirit
In short: In a sport defined by massive bulk, Enhō Yūya is a statistical anomaly. Weighing significantly less than the vast majority of upper-rank wrestlers, he has carved out a career by using his small stature as a weapon, mastering techniques to topple opponents nearly twice his size.
Born Yūya Nakamura in 1994, Enhō began his sumo journey at age five. After claiming the lightweight category at the 2012 World Junior Sumo Championships, this notable amateur later achieved two back-to-back World Amateur Sumo Championship trophies. His path to the professional ranks was marked by high-level preparation, including a university major in sports medicine, which provided a scientific backdrop to his physical training.
Joining the Miyagino stable under the mentorship of former yokozuna Hakuhō, he adopted the shikona Enhō—combining 'en' (fiery) with the mythological bird Peng. His rise was meteoric; he tied the record for the fastest promotion to the salaried sekitori ranks, reaching the division in just six tournaments. However, his journey has been defined by a constant battle against his own physiology. Despite his technical prowess, he faced a grueling cycle of injuries, including a suspected concussion, an orbital blowout fracture, and a severe spinal cord injury in 2023 that left him hospitalized and temporarily unable to perform basic daily tasks.
Enhō’s significance in sumo history is cemented by his ability to defy the 'weight is everything' meta. In 2020, he became only the third wrestler under 100 kilograms (220 lb) since 1975 to defeat an ōzeki. His signature moves, shitatenage and ashitori, allow him to leverage an opponent's momentum against them. After a period of forced absence due to injury and stable transfers, he returned to the ring in July 2024, beginning a new chapter in the Isegahama stable.
