How a sci-fi TV episode provided a name for rock stardom
In short: Before they were platinum-selling alt-rockers, this Southern California band went by several names. It took a specific moment of television fiction to finally give them an identity that would stick through decades of hiatuses, reunions, and even a high-profile boycott of streaming giants.
Formed in 1995 in La Crescenta, California, the group originally operated under the names Yakoo and Eleventeen. During their Eleventeen era, the members were still in high school and managed by Jake Knight, even securing a contract with RCA. The transition to their permanent moniker, Eve 6, was inspired by a moment of fandom: drummer Tony Fagenson suggested the name after seeing an episode of The X-Files titled "Eve," which featured a character known as "Eve 6."
The band experienced a meteoric rise in the late 1990s. Their 1998 self-titled debut achieved platinum success, driven by the No. 1 Modern Rock hit "Inside Out." They followed this with the gold-selling 2000 album Horrorscope, featuring the Top 40 hit "Here's to the Night." However, the pressures of sudden fame took a toll. Following the 2003 release of It's All in Your Head, the band faced mental and physical exhaustion, leading to an indefinite hiatus in 2004.
The group's history is defined by cycles of fragmentation and reunion. After a period of side projects like The Sugi Tap, the original core reunited in 2011. While the lineup has seen changes, such as the departure of drummer Tony Fagenson in 2018 and the return of guitarist Jon Siebels, the band has remained prolific. From 2021's Grim Value to their 2024 self-released album Dream Fist, they have navigated the shift from major labels like RCA to independent ventures and even joined Neil Young in a 2022 protest against Spotify's business practices.
