The assassination that sparked a revolution and a regional holiday
In short: In 1986, a young governor was gunned down in a remote Philippine province. His death didn't just silence a critic; it became a catalyst for the People Power Revolution. From a local tragedy to a national turning point, his story is one of defiance against tyranny.
Evelio Bellaflor Javier was a prominent Filipino lawyer and politician who served as the governor of Antique. In 1971, at just 28 years old, he won the governorship by one of the largest margins in the province's history, becoming the youngest governor in the Philippines at that time. Despite his success, he remained a staunch opponent of Ferdinand Marcos's dictatorship, eventually becoming a key figure in the campaign for Corazon Aquino. His political rivalry with Arturo Pacificador, a Marcos crony, was marked by violence. In 1984, during a contested election for the Regular Batasang Pambansa, seven of Javier's supporters were killed in the Sibalom Bridge Massacre. Javier later filed a protest with the Supreme Court regarding massive election fraud and vote-buying in the region. On February 11, 1986, while taking a break from a debate over these contested votes, Javier was ambushed by masked gunmen at the New Capitol building in San Jose de Buenavista. He was struck by 24 bullet wounds and killed. The assassination served as a major spark for the People Power Revolution, which ousted Marcos just weeks later. The legal aftermath was complex: while the Supreme Court eventually ruled in Javier's favor regarding the 1984 election fraud, the murder trials were plagued by accusations of judicial bias and were suspended multiple times. Although Pacificador was eventually acquitted in 2004, his political influence was broken when he lost the 1995 governorship to Javier's brother, Exequiel. Today, the day of his death is a special non-working holiday across four provinces on Panay island.
