How a football club rose from a school graduate project to champions
In short: What began in 2005 as a way for football school graduates to turn professional has evolved into a Lithuanian powerhouse. From legal battles over their very name to securing historic European qualification, the journey of FK Kauno Žalgiris is a testament to steady, strategic growth.
The origins of the club trace back to 2004, when coaches at the Kaunas football school 'Tauras' envisioned a professional pathway for their graduates. This vision became a reality in 2005 with the formation of FM Spyris. Playing in the LFF II league's southern division in yellow and blue, the club's first official match took place on 1 May 2005, resulting in a 2–1 defeat to FK Sveikata Kybartai.
The club's ascent was marked by significant identity shifts and legal friction. After a brief period as FM Aisčiai Kaunas in 2010, the team moved toward the top tier. Their 2015 entry into the A Lyga sparked controversy when they adopted the Žalgiris name, prompting a legal complaint from FK Žalgiris Vilnius over regulations against duplicate names. This tension led to the formal adoption of the current name, FK Kauno Žalgiris, in 2016 to align with the basketball club BC Žalgiris.
Since then, the club has transitioned from a mid-table competitor to a dominant force. After finishing third in both 2020 and 2021, and as runners-up in 2022, they achieved their first A Lyga championship in 2025. Their triumph reached global levels; by defeating KÍ Klaksvík during UEFA Champions League qualifying on 29 July 2026, they guaranteed entry into the UEFA Conference League group stage, marking the second time a Lithuanian side has accomplished this.
Today, the club operates out of the Darius and Girėnas Stadium, the largest all-seater facility in the Baltic States, with a capacity of 15,026. They are supported by main sponsor Betsson, whose partnership is secured through 2027.
