In short: In 1987, FK Vardar achieved one of the most bizarre administrative victories in sports history. After a massive match-fixing scandal rocked Yugoslav football, they were crowned champions by UEFA—despite a court later stripping them of the trophy and awarding it to their rivals.

The 1985–86 Yugoslav First League season ended in chaos when the Football Association of Yugoslavia, led by Slavko Šajber, voided the final week's results due to widespread irregularities. Twelve clubs were docked six points for alleged match-fixing. While most teams agreed to replay their fixtures, FK Partizan refused, leading to a 3–0 forfeit loss that handed Red Star Belgrade the title.

When the league resumed in 1986–87, ten teams started with -6 points. Vardar, however, was not among those docked points and went on to win the title. This sparked a protracted legal battle; while the original table (naming Partizan as champions) was eventually recognized in 1987, UEFA officially recognized Vardar as the champion for the purpose of European competition.

This unique status allowed Vardar to participate in the 1987–88 European Cup with a squad including captain Darko Pančev. The club's history is defined by such resilience, from its 1947 merger of rivals FK Pobeda and FK Makedonija to becoming the first Macedonian club to reach a European group stage in 2017–18 after defeating Turkish giants Fenerbahçe.

Today, Vardar remains the most successful club in North Macedonia. They hold 17 major honors, including twelve Championship titles. Their legacy is cemented by icons like Andon Dončevski, who scored 217 goals for the club, and their status as a pioneer of joint-stock ownership in Macedonian football since 2012.
