From Mississippi high school athlete to NFL defensive powerhouse
In short: Before becoming a cornerstone of the Philadelphia Eagles defense, Fletcher Cox was a multi-sport standout in Mississippi. His journey from a high-jumping high schooler to a Super Bowl champion and professional drag racer reveals a rare level of elite versatility and sustained athletic excellence.
Fletcher Cox's rise to NFL prominence began at Yazoo City High School, where he demonstrated remarkable athleticism across football, basketball, and track and field. He secured an eighth-place finish in the high jump, jumping 1.74 metres at the 2009 Division 3-4A Meet. His physical profile was already striking during his senior year, when he recorded 104 tackles and benched 300 pounds.
After a standout collegiate career at Mississippi State University, Cox entered the NFL in 2012. The Philadelphia Eagles selected him 12th overall in the first round, making him the highest Mississippi State Bulldog drafted since Michael Haddix in 1983. Over 12 seasons, Cox became a defensive mainstay, earning six Pro Bowl selections and four All-Pro honors. He was a vital component of the Eagles' Super Bowl LII championship victory over the New England Patriots.
Beyond the gridiron, Cox has pursued a high-speed passion for drag racing. While his professional football career prevented him from competing, he managed Cox Racing, which secured the 2017 NMCA Street Outlaw championship. After retiring from the NFL in March 2024, he entered professional racing, notably securing the Pro 10.5 title at the 2026 Drag Illustrated World Series of Pro Mod.
His legacy is cemented by his inclusion on the NFL 2010s All-Decade Team, a testament to his consistency and impact on the game during a decade of high-powered offensive play.
