In short: In the far future, the Galactic Empire is ruled by a genetic dynasty of clones. When mathematician Hari Seldon uses psychohistory to forecast the empire's unavoidable decay, he triggers a high-stakes conflict. As the regime faces its predicted end, a secret Foundation is established to preserve the light of human knowledge.

The Apple TV+ series Foundation, created by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman, adapts the classic stories by Isaac Asimov. At the heart of the narrative is the Galactic Empire, a 12,000-year-old regime governed by a triumvirate of clones known as Empire: Brother Day, Brother Dusk, and Brother Dawn. This genetic dynasty has been quietly managed for 400 years by Lady Demerzel, a unique, ageless humanoid robot and the last survivor of an ancient conflict known as the Robot Wars.

The central tension begins when Hari Seldon, a professor of psychology and mathematics, develops psychohistory. This algorithmic science allows him to predict the actions of massive populations across vast timelines. After Gaal Dornick, a young prodigy from the knowledge-averse planet Synnax, solves a complex proof, she is brought to the capital planet Trantor. There, Seldon publicly forecasts the empire's collapse. While the Cleonic dynasty is initially dismissive, they eventually allow Seldon and his followers to establish a Foundation on the remote planet Terminus to mitigate the coming chaos.

The series chronicles the centuries-long struggle between the decaying Empire and the growing Foundation. While Seldon’s math is designed to navigate the galaxy through the fall, the future remains imperiled by the one variable his psychohistory fails to account for: the Mule, a powerful Mentalic seeking total conquest. As the story unfolds across multiple seasons, the narrative explores how individual lives, such as those of Warden Salvor Hardin and trader Hober Mallow, bridge the divide between the crumbling past and an uncertain future.
