The meteoric rise of Europe's most prolific teenage striker
In short: In a single season, one young forward dominated the European scoring charts. From the academies of Portugal to the heights of the Danish Superliga, Franculino Djú’s journey is a masterclass in rapid professional ascent and clinical finishing.
Born in Bissau on 28 June 2004, Franculino Djú’s path to footballing prominence began in Portugal. After developing in the youth ranks at Olivais e Moscavide, he joined the prestigious Benfica academy in January 2020. His talent was immediately evident; by the end of the 2022–23 season, he had netted 13 goals in just 11 appearances for Benfica's under-23 side.
A pivotal moment occurred in September 2022, when Midtjylland vice sporting director Ove Pedersen witnessed Djú's performance against Mafra U23. Recognizing an opportunity as the player's contract neared its end, Midtjylland secured his move. His arrival in Denmark in July 2023 sparked an extraordinary run of form. During the 2023–24 season, he established himself as the highest-scoring teenager in European football, tallying 17 goals across all competitions and helping Midtjylland secure the Danish Superliga title.
Djú's impact in the Superliga was marked by individual accolades, including being named Young Player of the Month in September 2024 and Player of the Month in July 2025. His market value surged significantly; in August 2025, Midtjylland reportedly turned down a €30 million bid from a Saudi club—a potential record for the Danish league. Despite facing injury setbacks that required surgery, his clinical nature remained, scoring 16 goals in 17 league matches during the first half of the 2025–26 season. His recent move to the Turkish Süper Lig club Trabzonspor in September 2026 marks the next chapter in a career defined by unprecedented scoring efficiency.
