The hidden power of 'backwater' skills in a master swordsman's legacy
In short: Beryl Gardinant views himself as an unimpressive rural instructor, yet his students have become the kingdom's most formidable figures. This story explores how foundational techniques taught in a remote dojo can evolve into elite mastery, creating a ripple effect of power across an entire nation.
Beryl Gardinant is a middle-aged swordsman who operates a small, rural dojo. Despite his own modest self-perception, Beryl possesses the ability to read an opponent's next move and counter it with near-unmatched precision. His reputation as a master began to surface when former pupils—now high-ranking knights, adventurers, and mages—began seeking him out for their expertise.
The narrative centers on the contrast between Beryl's 'backwater' training methods and the elite results they produced. For instance, Allucia Citrus, leader of the Liberion Order, relies on incredible speed honed by Beryl, while Surena Lysandra uses overwhelming strength to slay an immortal dragon. Even Ficelle Harbeller adapted his teachings into a unique form of sword magic for the Magic Corps.
The impact of Beryl's pedagogy is shown through diverse applications: Curuni Crueciel utilizes a Zweihänder for raw power, and Rose Marbleheart serves as a lieutenant in the Holy Order. These varied paths demonstrate how a singular, foundational style can be adapted into different roles—from frontline combat to political influence—proving that true mastery lies in the versatility of the basics.
The series, which originated on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō website in November 2020, highlights this theme of hidden excellence. It challenges the idea that elite skill requires flashy environments, suggesting instead that profound competence can be cultivated in obscurity, only to be revealed when those students finally step into the light.
