The shifting lineup and evolving sound of South Korean group Fromis 9
In short: From a nine-member survival show project to a five-member powerhouse, Fromis 9 has navigated radical management changes, member departures, and a complete sonic transformation. Discover how this group transitioned from bubblegum pop to funky retro-pop while maintaining a dedicated following.
Formed through the 2017 reality show Idol School, Fromis 9 originally debuted on January 24, 2018, under Stone Music Entertainment. The group's name, suggested by netizens, combines 'From Idol School' with 'Promise' in Korean pronunciation. After periods of oversight by Pledis Entertainment and Off the Record Entertainment, five individuals—Baek Ji-heon, Lee Na-gyung, Lee Chae-young, Park Ji-won, and Song Ha-young—joined Asnd during January 2025.
The group's composition has been in constant flux. While they began with nine members, Jang Gyu-ri departed in July 2022. The group underwent major changes in February 2025, following the departures of Lee Seo-yeon, Roh Ji-sun, and Lee Sae-rom. Despite these changes, the remaining five members continued under the original name, even launching their first world tour, 'Now Tomorrow,' in August 2025.
Musically, the group has undergone a notable stylistic shift. Early releases like 'To. Heart' and 'Love Bomb' were characterized by a dance-pop and bubblegum pop sound. By 2020, they transitioned toward a 'funky retro-pop' style with hits like 'Feel Good (Secret Code)'. Their later discography has explored diverse genres, including R&B, UK garage, and even Miami bass with the 2024 single 'Supersonic.'
Beyond their music, the members are active participants in their creative process. Members like Jiwon, Jiheon, and Seoyeon have earned songwriting and production credits on various tracks. This creative agency, paired with their 'summer queen' reputation, has helped them maintain a distinct identity in the competitive K-pop landscape.
