From teenage prodigy to international star: the rise of Gabigol
In short: Few players command a stadium's devotion like Gabriel Barbosa. Known for his flamboyant style and clinical finishing, the Brazilian striker has transitioned from a highly-touted youth prospect to a prolific goalscorer, securing major titles and individual honours across the most prestigious clubs in South America.
Born in São Bernardo do Campo in 1996, Gabriel Barbosa entered the Santos academy at age eight. The moniker 'Gabigol' was given to him after he scored many goals for the academy. A professional deal featuring a €50 million release fee was secured in 2012, leading to his senior appearance in early 2013.
His career trajectory saw him move through several major clubs, including a high-profile transfer to Inter Milan in 2016 for a reported €29.5m. During his time in Italy, he was even compared to Mauro Icardi due to his evolving playing style. He also experienced a stint in Portugal with Benfica, though his time there was brief, totaling only 165 minutes of play.
However, it was at Flamengo where he achieved legendary status. Between 2019 and 2024, he scored 161 goals in 306 appearances, including decisive strikes in the 2019 and 2022 Copa Libertadores finals. His dominance in the Brazilian league was so complete that he became the first player since 1995 to be the nation's top scorer in two consecutive years.
Despite his success, his career has faced turbulence. In 2024, the Brazilian Doping Control Authority initially suspended him for two years following allegations of attempted anti-doping fraud related to an incident in April 2023. While the player denied any wrongdoing, the Court of Arbitration for Sport stayed the ban in April 2024, allowing him to continue competing.
