The Turkish club that won the world's most valuable title
In short: In 2008, Fenerbahçe S.K. achieved a feat that stunned the global sporting world. For one year, this Istanbul-based multi-sport club surpassed Manchester United to become the most valuable club on the planet. Beyond its market cap, it holds a Guinness World Record for its sheer volume of trophies.
Founded in 1907 in the Ottoman Empire, Fenerbahçe was born in secrecy. The Sultan, Abdul Hamid II, had strictly forbidden Turkish youth from forming clubs or playing football—a game then associated with English families. To avoid trouble with the law, founders Ziya Songülen, Ayetullah Bey, and Necip Okaner kept the club's activities hidden until a 1908 legislation reform allowed for legal registration.
The club's identity is deeply tied to Istanbul's geography. Its name translates to "lighthouse garden," referencing a historic lighthouse at Fenerbahçe Cape. This location inspired the first crest, featuring yellow and white colors from daffodils and oak leaves. In 1910, the colors were updated to the iconic yellow and navy, while the badge was redesigned by Hikmet Topuzer to symbolize purity, love for the club, and resistance.
Fenerbahçe is a powerhouse of multi-sport excellence. It is one of the few European clubs to win titles across multiple departments, including football, basketball, volleyball, and table tennis. The club's basketball department made history as the first Turkish team to win the EuroLeague and the first sports club to crown both men's and women's basketball teams as European champions in the same year (2023).
The club's history is marked by both triumph and tragedy. In 1932, the Kuşdili Fire destroyed all material artifacts, including trophies and membership records. Because of this loss, the club adopted May 3, 1918—the day Atatürk first visited the clubhouse—as its official founding day. Despite the fire, the club maintains a record 28 Turkish championship titles and a Guinness World Record for 1,134 total cups and medals across its nine departments.
