In short: What began as humorous commentary over Japanese death matches evolved into a major independent force. Founded by the Insane Clown Posse, this promotion transitioned from parody-heavy rosters to a hardcore wrestling mainstay that once ranked as one of the highest-grossing wrestling organizations in the United States.

Juggalo Championship Wrestling (JCW) was founded in 1999 by Joseph Bruce (Violent J) and Joseph Utsler (Shaggy 2 Dope) of the hip-hop duo Insane Clown Posse. The promotion's origins are rooted in the duo's fascination with extreme wrestling; in 1996, they released a VHS titled ICP's Strangle-Mania, which featured Japanese death matches overlaid with their own comedic commentary. This early interest in the genre helped shape JCW's hardcore style, which Bruce and Utsler compared to the frantic camera work of the film Natural Born Killers.

The company's trajectory saw significant commercial success in its early years. Its first video release, JCW Vol. 1, reached number 2 on the Billboard Sports and Recreation Top Sellers list and remained on the charts for 38 weeks. The United States' second most profitable wrestling entity was JCW by 2002. This period also saw mainstream exposure when JCW Heavyweight Champion Vampiro brought his title onto WCW's Monday Nitro on August 21, 2000, accompanied by the Insane Clown Posse.

The promotion has undergone several evolutions, including a name change from Juggalo Championshit Wrestling to Juggalo Championship Wrestling in 2007. Over the decades, JCW has expanded its reach through diverse media, including the SlamTV! internet program and various pay-per-view events. Kevin Canady acted as head trainer when the firm opened its JCW Wrestling School in 2010. More recently, the promotion has continued to adapt, launching the series Lunacy in 2024 and announcing investor Vince Russo in 2025.
