The nomadic journey of a quarterback destined for the NFL
In short: Growing up in eight different states and Canada, Garrett Nussmeier learned to adapt before he ever stepped onto a professional field. His path to the Kansas City Chiefs was defined by a constant state of motion and a high-stakes competition for the starting role at LSU.
Nussmeier’s upbringing was defined by the itinerant lifestyle of his father, Doug Nussmeier, a former NFL player and current New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator. Because of his father's coaching career, Garrett moved 12 times during his youth, living in eight different states and Canada. This nomadic background provided a unique foundation for a young athlete who eventually settled in Flower Mound, Texas, to attend Edward S. Marcus High School. There, he established himself as a prolific passer, recording 3,788 yards and 38 touchdowns during his junior year alone.
His transition to the collegiate level at LSU was marked by complex administrative hurdles and intense competition. As a true freshman, he played four games before redshirting. In 2022, LSU even petitioned the NCAA to allow him to start in the Texas Bowl while maintaining his redshirt status, a request that was ultimately denied. During his redshirt freshman season, he found himself in a three-way battle for the starting position against Myles Brennan and Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels. While he spent much of that year off the bench, he eventually earned MVP honors in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl after throwing for 395 yards and three touchdowns.
Nussmeier eventually took the reins for the 2024 season, leading the Tigers to a 9–4 record. However, his redshirt senior campaign was a study in the volatility of elite athletics. Despite victories over ranked opponents like Clemson and Florida, he faced public criticism and an abdominal injury that eventually led to him being benched for the remainder of the season. During the 2026 draft, the Kansas City Chiefs chose him as the 249th overall selection in round seven, leading to his first pro game facing the Los Angeles Rams.
Beyond the gridiron, Nussmeier’s life is rooted in his faith as a Christian and his personal ties to his hometown of Lake Charles, Louisiana. His journey from a transient childhood to the NFL highlights the endurance required to navigate the high-pressure environment of modern football.
