From first-round prodigy to the NFL's most resilient comeback story
In short: In 2022, the Tennessee Titans traded away star receiver A.J. Brown to secure the 18th overall pick. But for Treylon Burks, the path from a highly-ranked recruit to professional stardom has been defined by a relentless cycle of elite talent and devastating injury.
Treylon Burels's ascent began in Warren, Arkansas, where he was a standout multi-sport athlete. As a high school wide receiver, he amassed 3,403 yards and 43 touchdowns, though his senior season in 2018 was largely lost to a torn ACL. Despite this setback, he emerged as the top recruit in Arkansas and a four-star national prospect, eventually committing to the University of Arkansas in July 2018. Beyond the football field, Burks was a versatile athlete who also competed in baseball and basketball during his time at Warren High School.
His collegiate career at Arkansas was marked by rapid progression. By his junior year in 2021, he became only the fourth player in program history to surpass 1,000 receiving yards in a single season, earning 1st Team All-SEC honors. This performance propelled him into the 2022 NFL Draft, where he was selected in the first round by the Tennessee Titans.
However, his professional journey has been a grueling test of endurance. Burks has faced a litany of injuries, including turf toe in 2022, an LCL sprain in 2023, and season-ending ACL surgery in late 2024. Even after being waived by the Titans in October 2025, he found a new home with the Washington Commanders. His resilience was on display during the 2025 season when a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch—noted by Odell Beckham Jr. for its similarity to his own famous play—helped define his return to the spotlight.
