From Ohio State standout to New York Jets record breaker
In short: Before he was an NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Garrett Wilson was a high school phenom in Texas. Trace the rapid ascent of a wide receiver who transformed from a five-star recruit into a cornerstone of the New York Jets offense.
Born in Chicago on July 22, 2000, Garrett Wilson’s path to professional football was marked by significant geographic and positional shifts. After growing up in Dublin, Ohio, he moved to Austin, Texas, where he attended Lake Travis High School. There, he helped secure a 6A state championship in 2016 and established himself as a prolific talent, setting school records for career receptions (204), yards (3,359), and touchdowns (55).
Wilson’s collegiate career at Ohio State University saw him evolve from an outside receiver to a slot receiver in 2020. His impact was immediate; as a true freshman in 2019, he contributed 432 receiving yards across 14 games. By late 2020, he achieved a rare feat, becoming only the second player in Ohio State history to record four consecutive games with at least 100 receiving yards.
The 2022 NFL Draft marked his transition to the professional ranks, where the New York Jets selected him 10th overall. His rookie campaign was historic for the franchise, as he set new Jets rookie records for both receptions (83) and receiving yards (1,103) in a single season. This performance earned him the Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award on February 9, 2023.
Despite facing setbacks, including a knee sprain that placed him on injured reserve in late 2025, Wilson has remained a central figure for the Jets. His career has been defined by high-volume production, including a 101-reception season in 2024, and a massive four-year, $130 million contract extension signed in July 2025.
