The versatile performer who mastered Broadway's most iconic musical roles
In short: From the flamboyant Roger De Bris to the charming Lumiere, Gary Beach was a cornerstone of the musical stage. His career was defined by a rare ability to bridge the gap between live theater and the silver screen, even achieving a historic feat of simultaneous performance.
Gary Beach was a distinguished American actor whose career spanned stage, film, and television. Born in Alexandria, Virginia, on October 10, 1947, he refined his craft at the North Carolina School of the Arts. He became a celebrated figure on Broadway, known for his ability to inhabit complex, often comedic characters with immense charisma.
Beach’s career was marked by several significant milestones in musical theater. He received a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical after creating the role of Lumiere in the 1994 stage musical adaptation of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. He continued this success in 2001 when he originated the role of Roger De Bris in The Producers, a performance that earned him a Tony Award for Featured Actor in a Musical.
One of his most remarkable achievements occurred in 2005. During the film's theatrical run, Beach reprised his Roger De Bris character on stage, a feat making him the initial performer to play that specific part on Broadway and in cinema simultaneously. His versatility was demonstrated during 2004's Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles, where playing Albin earned him a third Tony nomination for Leading Actor.
Beyond the musical stage, Beach was a prolific television actor with credits in shows such as Cheers, Saved by the Bell, and Murder, She Wrote. He also lent his voice to the Family Guy episode 'Partial Terms of Endearment,' which was famously banned from television. Beach passed away on July 17, 2018, in Palm Springs, California, at the age of 70.
