From cult hero to FA Cup winner: the versatile career of Gary Caldwell
In short: He was once jeered by fans for transfer rumours and nicknamed 'heid' by supporters. The adaptable Scotsman progressed from Newcastle's second string to win the FA Cup and secure induction into the Scottish FA International Roll of Honour.
Gary Caldwell’s footballing journey is defined by adaptability and resilience. Primarily a centre back, he frequently transitioned into roles as a right back or defensive midfielder. His early career saw him move from Celtic Boys Club to Newcastle United at age 16, though breaking into the first team proved difficult. This led to several loan spells at clubs including Darlington and Hibernian during the 2001–02 season, and later Coventry and Derby County.
His time at Celtic was marked by both silverware and controversy. While he helped the club secure the 2006–07 Scottish Cup and two league championships, he faced intense criticism. Fans jeered him following rumours of a pre-contract agreement, and he faced backlash for a tackle on David Fernández that caused a cruciate ligament injury. However, he eventually earned respect, becoming a cult hero and winning the 2008–09 Writers' Player of the Year award after finding stability in his preferred position.
Caldwell’s peak achievements came in England with Wigan Athletic. After joining in January 2010, he was appointed captain and played a vital role in the club's 2011–12 Premier League survival, earning Wigan's Player of the Year award. The pinnacle of his playing career arrived in May 2013, when he jointly lifted the FA Cup after a 1–0 victory over Manchester City. Following a retirement in 2015 due to a long-term hip injury, he transitioned into management, leading Wigan to a League One title and promotion.
Notably, he played alongside his brother Steven in five matches, marking the first time siblings had played together for the national team since the 1940s.
