The only striker to score across every tier of English football
In short: Gary Hooper achieved a feat of geographical and competitive breadth that remains unparalleled. From the muddy pitches of non-League football to the bright lights of the UEFA Champions League, he became the first and only player to find the net in every single professional division in England.
Hooper’s journey is a masterclass in the 'pyramid' of English football. He began his career in 2003 at Grays Athletic, a non-League club. During his tenure there, he helped the team win the Conference South and secured two FA Trophy titles. His progression through the ranks was steady but varied; he moved to Southend United in 2006, where he experienced the Championship and League One, before being loaned out to Leyton Orient and Hereford United.
The defining characteristic of Hooper's career is his versatility across different levels of competition. He is the first and only player to have scored in the Premier League, Championship, League One, and League Two, as well as various cup competitions like the FA Cup and League Cup. Beyond the English pyramid, he expanded his tally to include the Conference National, the A-League in Australia, and the Indian Super League, effectively scoring in nearly every professional context available to a modern forward.
His peak arrived in Scotland with Celtic. Joining in 2010 for £2.4 million, he became a prolific force, winning the Golden Boot with 24 goals in the 2011–12 season. During his time in the Scottish Premier League, he was noted for an extraordinary strike rate of 0.77 goals per match in 2010–11—a figure that ranked fourth in all of Europe, trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Antonio Di Natale. Despite his success, he never represented England at the international level, despite being called up to the under-21 squad in 2011.
Hooper's career serves as a testament to the 'production line' of English talent. While he was released by Tottenham Hotspur at age 14 after a brief trial, his subsequent rise from Sunday league football to a Celtic icon highlights the diverse pathways to the top of the sport.
