From backup quarterback to Super Bowl hero: the dual life of Gary Kubiak
In short: Gary Kubiak spent nearly a decade as the shadow of a Hall of Fame legend, learning the game from the sidelines before leading his former team to a championship. His journey from a high school record-breaker to a Super Bowl-winning head coach is a masterclass in patience and persistence.
Kubiak's professional path began in the shadow of John Elway. Drafted in the eighth round of the 1983 NFL draft, Kubiak spent nine seasons as the Broncos' backup quarterback. While he appeared in 119 regular-season games, he only started three, primarily serving as the safety net for Elway. Despite this limited role, he was part of three AFC Championship teams, gaining invaluable experience in high-stakes environments.
His transition to coaching was marked by immediate success. After serving as a running backs coach at Texas A&M, he joined the San Francisco 49ers in 1994 as the quarterbacks coach. There, he guided Steve Young to a Super Bowl XXIX victory and a Super Bowl-record six touchdowns. He then spent 11 seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Broncos, helping the team amass 66,501 total yards—the most in the NFL during that span—and coaching 14 different Pro Bowl players.
The pinnacle of his career arrived in 2015 when he returned to Denver as head coach, a move he described as his "dream job." He led the Broncos to a victory in Super Bowl 50 on February 7, 2016. However, his tenure was cut short on January 1, 2017, when he stepped down for health reasons following a 2013 transient ischemic attack (TIA). His career serves as a testament to the "long game" of sports, where years of secondary roles can build the foundation for ultimate leadership.
Kubiak's influence also extended to the Houston Texans, where he led the franchise to its first winning season in 2009 and its first playoff win in 2011. His ability to install complex schemes—like his version of the West Coast offense in Baltimore—solidified his reputation as one of the most technically proficient minds in modern football.
