From a football bookworm to a legendary voice of the game
In short: Gary Danielson’s journey through professional football was anything but a straight line. After being cut from the Canadian Football League and working in a sheet metal plant, he climbed through the ranks of the NFL to become a premier analyst, proving that deep intellectual study can transform a player's career.
Danielson's professional career was marked by resilience and unexpected shifts. After failing to secure an NFL spot initially, he played in the World Football League for the New York Stars and the Chicago Winds before the Detroit Lions offered him a contract in April 1976. His early NFL years were spent largely on the sidelines, even working in a sheet metal plant after being cut before the 1976 regular season. However, he eventually found success, setting a Lions single-season record in 1980 with 3,223 passing yards.
His tenacity was most visible during his tenure with the Cleveland Browns. In 1985, despite playing with a torn rotator cuff, Danielson delivered what critic Bill Livingston described as a 'transcendent accomplishment' that embodied self-sacrifice. This performance helped define the 'Bad News Browns' era. Over his NFL career, he amassed 13,764 passing yards, 1,105 completions, and 81 touchdowns across 101 games.
Beyond the field, Danielson earned a reputation as a football 'bookworm' due to his habit of studying complex strategic texts. This intellectual approach likely aided his transition to broadcasting. Following stints at ESPN and ABC Sports, he joined CBS Sports in 2006 as their lead college football analyst. He has received six Sports Emmy Award nominations for his work and is scheduled to retire following the 2025 season, with his final game expected to be the 2025 Sun Bowl.
