In short: Founded in 1966 through the union of three İzmit clubs, Kocaelispor has survived financial collapse and successive relegations. From winning national cups to battling in amateur leagues, the 'Gulf' has finally completed a dramatic 16-year journey back to the Süper Lig.

Kocaelispor’s identity was forged in 1966 when Baçspor, İzmit Gençlik, and Doğanspor united to form a professional entity. This merger, supported by an initial subscription campaign that raised roughly 175,000 lira, allowed the club to enter the national second tier. The club's colors, green and black, were chosen during this foundational congress and remain central to its identity today. The project was initially championed by Mayor Osman Gencal, a former athlete who secured a 28-acre municipal plot for the club's use. This strategic allocation of land in Baç provided the essential infrastructure needed for the new club to thrive.

The club reached its zenith during the 1990s and early 2000s. In the 1992–93 season, the 'legendary roster' (efsane kadro) secured a fourth-place finish in the top flight, earning a berth in the 1993–94 UEFA Cup. This era was marked by significant national success, including winning the Turkish Cup in 1997 and again in 2002, the latter of which saw them defeat Beşiktaş by a wide margin. During their peak, the team's tactical approach relied on a defensive spine from the Balkan school combined with rapid vertical transitions. This style helped them secure their historic fourth-place league finish and subsequent European qualification.

However, the club's trajectory has been volatile. Following financial difficulties and relegation in 2009, Kocaelispor suffered a series of declines, eventually dropping into the Turkish Regional Amateur League in 2014. A sustained rebuilding process saw them climb back through the professional pyramid, culminating in their return to the Süper Lig for the 2024–25 season after a 16-year absence. Their resurgence was driven by a successful climb through the TFF 3. Lig and 2. Lig divisions. This momentum eventually culminated in a mathematically guaranteed promotion to the top flight during the spring of 2025.
