In short: In 1974, a high-pitched vocal and a late arrival transformed a studio session into a global phenomenon. George McCrae’s "Rock Your Baby" became a cornerstone of the disco era, selling millions of copies and defining a sound that was never actually intended to be his.

The creation of "Rock Your Baby" was a comedy of errors. KC and the Sunshine Band members Harry Wayne Casey and Richard Finch first requested the track. They needed a vocalist capable of hitting specific high notes that they could not reach themselves. The original plan was for George's wife, Gwen McCrae, to record the track. However, Gwen arrived late to the session, leaving George to step into the booth alone. The result was an unexpected success. George’s natural vocal range perfectly suited the requirements of the song, leading it to become one of the first major hits of the disco era in 1974. The track was a commercial juggernaut, selling an estimated eleven million copies worldwide and topping the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Its cultural impact was so significant that Rolling Stone magazine named it the number one song of the year for 1974. While the song propelled McCrae to international fame and a Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocalist in 1975, his career followed a complex path. After a period of commercial decline in the late 1970s, he moved to Canada and later the Netherlands. He eventually returned to the spotlight in the 1980s and 2010s, notably releasing a 2016 concept album, Love, which featured his daughters on backing vocals and was recorded using only vintage instruments without sequencing.
