From the front lines of the Air Force to the San Antonio mayoralty
In short: She navigated the risks of 'don't ask, don't tell' to become a decorated intelligence officer. Now, Gina Ortiz Jones is making history as a trailblazing leader in Texas politics, breaking long-standing barriers for women, veterans, and the LGBTQ+ community.
Gina Ortiz Jones’s path to leadership is defined by a series of historic firsts. An alumna of Boston University with degrees in economics and East Asian studies, Jones served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force, including a deployment to Iraq. During her early military career, she navigated the complexities of the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy, a period during which her sexual orientation could have jeopardized her AFROTC scholarship.
Her political ascent began with high-stakes congressional battles in Texas's 23rd district. In 2018, she narrowly lost to Republican Will Hurd by just 1,150 votes in one of the state's most competitive races. She ran again in 2020, facing Republican Tony Gonzales, who won with 51% of the vote. Despite these electoral setbacks, Jones transitioned into significant federal roles, serving in the Office of the U.S. She held the role of Trade Representative throughout the Trump era and subsequently acted as Air Force Under Secretary between 2021 and 2023 under Biden.
In her role as Under Secretary, Jones implemented critical policy changes, such as updating regulations for pregnant service members and enhancing support for victims of domestic abuse. In 2025, she achieved a landmark victory, winning the San Antonio mayoral runoff with 54.3% of the vote. As mayor, she stands as the first Asian-American female mayor of a major Texas city and the first openly lesbian mayor in San Antonio's history. Her leadership continues to face scrutiny, including a 2026 city council censure following a workplace conduct investigation.
