The clinical striker who mastered the art of the four-goal haul
In short: In the 2020–21 Eredivisie season, one man achieved a feat so rare it placed him alongside legends. Giorgos Giakoumakis didn't just score; he dominated, twice netting four goals in a single match to rewrite the record books of the Dutch top flight.
While playing for VVV-Venlo, the Greek striker entered the history books by becoming one of only two players in the 21st century to score four goals in a single Eredivisie game twice. He joined the ranks of former Ajax striker Luis Suárez by achieving this feat in both a 4–1 victory against ADO Den Haag on 14 January 2021 and a similar 4–1 win against Vitesse on 28 January 2021.
His January 2021 run was nothing short of extraordinary. Not only did he secure the Eredivisie Player of the Month award, but he also recorded the highest goal tally in the Netherlands within a single calendar month since 1985. His only competition for that level of dominance was Marco Van Basten, who reached 12 goals with Ajax.
Giakoumakis's scoring prowess was not limited to the Netherlands. After a £2.5 million move to Celtic in August 2021, he became the joint top scorer of the Scottish Premiership for the 2021–22 season. Remarkably, he reached 13 goals in just 21 appearances, significantly more efficient than Regan Charles-Cook, who required 37 games to reach the same tally.
From his beginnings in Heraklion, Crete, to stints in Poland, Scotland, the United States, and Mexico, Giakoumakis has proven to be a nomadic and prolific force. His career has seen him transition from a local talent at Atsalenios to a global striker, earning accolades such as the 2020–21 Best Greek Player playing Abroad and MLS Newcomer of the Year.
