From the streets of Scampia to the heights of European football
In short: Born in Naples, Rolando Mandragora’s journey through the Italian leagues is a saga of immense talent, high-stakes transfers, and resilient recoveries. From a €12 million potential valuation at Juventus to captaining Italy's youth squads, his career reflects the volatile, high-pressure world of professional Serie A football.
Rolando Mandragora’s rise began in the Scampia district of Naples, where his father operated a football school established by legends Paolo and Fabio Cannavaro. A standout talent from a young age, Mandragora joined Genoa's youth academy at fourteen after being scouted while playing for Mariano Keller. He made his professional Serie A debut on 29 October 2014, appearing in a 1–0 victory against Juventus. Before his time at Genoa, he honed his skills at Mariano Keller. His early professional years also included appearances for Pescara in Serie B.
His career has been defined by significant movements between Italy's top clubs. In January 2016, Juventus signed him for an initial €6 million, a deal that could have risen to €12 million. While he spent time on loan at Pescara, Crotone, and Udinese, Juventus maintained a strong interest, re-signing him in October 2020 for €10.7 million. His tenure at Udinese saw both personal milestones, such as his first goal in December 2018, and disciplinary challenges, including a retrospective ban for blasphemy in August 2018. During his 2017 season with Crotone, he played nearly every league match, scoring his first professional goal against Benevento. His time at Udinese also included a red card received via VAR.
Despite facing significant physical setbacks—including a fractured metatarsal in 2016 and an ACL injury in June 2020—Mandragora has remained a fixture in Italian football. He has represented Italy at every youth level from U17 to U21, even captaining the U21 side during the 2019 UEFA European Championship. Most recently, he played a role in Fiorentina's 2024 UEFA Europa Conference League campaign, appearing in the final against Olympiacos. He also played for Torino on loan starting in early 2021. His international journey includes representing Italy in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
