The ambitious, turbulent, and often heartbreaking rise of the Gold Coast Suns
In short: From a failed 1996 merger bid to a historic first finals appearance, the Gold Coast Suns' journey has been anything but smooth. Between heavy defeats and controversial rebranding, discover how a club built on a '20-ONE-3' dream navigated a decade of instability.
The path to the AFL was paved with rejected ambitions. In 1996, the powerful Southport Sharks attempted to secure a license, but the AFL opted for Port Adelaide instead. Later, the league attempted to relocate North Melbourne to the region, but the move was blocked. Ultimately, the AFL decided a fresh start was necessary, securing registration for the 'Gold Coast Football Club Ltd' in December 2007 and officially granting a license in March 2009.
The club's early years were defined by extreme volatility. Entering the AFL in 2011, the Suns endured massive losses, including a 150-point defeat to Geelong. Their 2012 season was even more harrowing, starting with 14 consecutive losses—the worst start for any team since 2001. Despite these struggles, the club saw moments of brilliance, such as captain Gary Ablett winning his second Brownlow Medal in 2013 and a dramatic, last-second victory over Richmond in 2012 led by Karmichael Hunt.
Management and identity have also been points of contention. The club's '20-ONE-3' plan, which aimed for a premiership by 2015, was criticized as overly ambitious and fell short of its membership goals. Coaching changes have been frequent, with leaders like Guy McKenna, Rodney Eame, and Stuart Dew all departing following periods of instability. Even a 2024 rebranding, featuring a 'Fearless' tagline and a new logo, faced significant fan backlash. However, the club finally reached a historic milestone in 2025, qualifying for the AFL finals for the first time after defeating Fremantle.
The club's physical home, Carrara Stadium, underwent a $144.2 million redevelopment to increase capacity to 25,000, ensuring the franchise had a modern foundation in Queensland.
