In short: In less than three decades, Gonzaga University transformed from a regional program into a consistent powerhouse. They have appeared in every NCAA tournament since 1999 and reached the Final Four twice, proving that elite success can be built outside of traditional athletic giants.

The Bulldogs' rise to prominence is a study in sustained excellence within a mid-major conference. While the program began in 1907–08 with an unofficial 9–2 record under George M. Varnell, it took decades to establish its current identity. A pivotal shift occurred in the late 1990s. After Dan Fitzgerald stepped back from coaching in 1997, Mark Few took over in July 1999. Under his leadership, Gonzaga began a remarkable streak of consistency, appearing in every NCAA tournament since their 'Cinderella' run to the Elite Eight in 1999.

The program’s growth is marked by historic milestones and statistical dominance. Since 1995, Gonzaga has appeared in all but one WCC conference title game, winning 21 of them. They achieved a notable 143-week active weekly poll streak between the 2016–17 season and January 15, 2024—the tenth longest in Division I history. The team also set school records for wins in a single season twice: reaching 35 wins in 2014–15 and an astounding 37 wins in the 2016–17 season.

The ultimate validation of this trajectory came in the late 2010s. In 2016–17, the Bulldogs advanced to their first-ever national championship game after a record-breaking 29-game winning streak. They returned to the Final Four again in 2021. Even at such levels, the team is characterised by its capacity to challenge top-tier national opponents, appearing within each concluding AP ranking from the 2008–09 period onwards.
