Can a dysfunctional family find common ground while mourning a sudden, unexpected loss?
In short: The 2022 film Goodbye examines the friction between tradition and modern life when a family reunites after the death of their matriarch. As siblings return home from across the globe, they must navigate clashing perspectives on grief, religious rites, and the complex, often messy, reality of their shared history.
Directed by Vikas Bahl, the film centers on the Bhalla family, whose lives are upended when Gayatri, the mother, passes away. Her daughter, Tara, a lawyer based in Mumbai, learns of the tragedy only after missing urgent calls while celebrating a professional milestone. The narrative follows the family as they converge in Chandigarh, forced to confront their internal fractures under the pressure of funeral arrangements and the weight of their collective loss.
The central conflict pits the patriarch, Harish, against his children. Harish struggles with his perception that his sons, Karan and Angad, are indifferent to their mother's death. Meanwhile, the siblings grapple with their own disconnected lives—ranging from a brother climbing Mount Everest to others living abroad in Dubai and Los Angeles. These geographic and emotional distances create a volatile environment where arguments over cremation rituals and personal choices, such as Tara’s relationship with a Muslim partner, expose deep-seated resentments.
While critics offered mixed assessments of the film’s sentimentality and pacing, many praised the performances of Amitabh Bachchan and Neena Gupta. The production, which spanned from April 2021 to June 2022, serves as a meditation on how families process sorrow. By forcing the characters into a confined space, the story explores whether shared history and the necessity of ritual can bridge the gaps between generations, eventually leading the family toward a fragile sense of closure and mutual understanding.
Despite a generally positive critical reception, the film struggled commercially, becoming a box office disappointment. It grossed approximately 8.74 crore rupees worldwide by mid-October 2022. The release was also marked by a poignant real-life event: actor Arun Bali, who played a supporting role, passed away on the very day the film premiered in theaters.
