Inside the dark, supernatural underworld of the Paradise District
In short: In a working-class district shared by humans and beastmen, a mysterious agency investigates more than just missing persons. Beyond the streets of Gokurakugai, monstrous entities known as Disaster Beasts are rising from the dead, threatening to expose a city's deepest, most violent secrets.
Gokurakugai, meaning 'Paradise District', is the setting for Yuto Sano’s manga series, which has been serialized in Shueisha's Jump Square since July 2022. The story follows the Gokurakugai Troubleshooter Agency, operated by Tao Saotome and Alma. While their professional duties include retrieving sensitive materials and locating missing individuals, the district is currently gripped by unrest due to a surge in disappearances and the discovery of mutilated animal corpses. The series' origins trace back to a one-shot titled 'Paradise District's Third Avenue Incident,' which debuted in early 2020. This narrative foundation set the stage for the ongoing saga in Jump Square.
The central conflict involves the emergence of 'Disaster Beasts' (maga)—monstrous beings born from deceased humans and animals. One such entity, Alma, is a 15-year-old hybrid of human and maga. His immense combat potential is currently suppressed by a 'karmic restraint' stake, a mechanism he is training to eventually remove himself. The agency's investigations into these creatures often reveal a darker side of the city's social fabric. The district's inhabitants include both humans and beastmen, such as a wolf-man involved in maga development. This coexistence defines the unique social landscape of the area.
The world is populated by a complex web of characters, including Tao, a human who utilizes firearms loaded with bullets crafted from Alma's own blood, and various researchers dedicated to studying the maga. The series has gained significant traction, with over 1.4 million copies in circulation as of February 2026. Its success is reflected in several industry recognitions, including winning the U-Next Award in 2025 and ranking highly on various bookstore recommendation lists. The manga's popularity extends to North America, where its debut volume reached the top 20 on the Circana BookScan monthly charts in April 2024. This global reach highlights the series' growing influence in the graphic novel market.
