The independent stadium built without a single cent of government support
In short: In a landscape where sports infrastructure often relies on state funding, Győri ETO FC stands as a structural anomaly. Their home ground, ETO Park, was constructed entirely through private means, creating a unique model for Hungarian football that balances commercial viability with community identity.
Opened in 2008 to replace the aging Stadion ETO, ETO Park is characterized by its 'a la English' architectural style, featuring open corners. While it currently holds a capacity of 16,000 spectators, the facility is designed for scalability; it can be expanded to host up to 30,000 people if necessary. Despite this scale, the stadium falls just short of hosting UEFA Champions League or Europa League finals because it cannot consistently accommodate the 30,000-seat requirement.
The club's path to establishing such a facility was marked by significant corporate shifts and financial turbulence. In 2001, Quaestor Financial Hungaria Kft. purchased both the club and the stadium from Rába Rt. However, this era ended in 2015 when Quaestor went bankrupt. The resulting debt of 200 million HUF forced the club into a crisis so severe it faced relegation to the third division or even the county championship, as they were unable to secure a license from the Hungarian Football Federation.
The stadium's unique status was highlighted by club president Csaba Tarsoly in 2013, who noted its independence from government funding. This private ownership model has seen various interests—from English and Belgian investors to local owner Oszkár Világi, who took control in February 2022. Today, the complex serves as a multi-purpose hub, hosting cultural events like concerts and exhibitions alongside professional football and national team matches.
