In short: Before they were known as the Golden Jaguars, they were British Guiana. From a 1905 debut to a historic 2019 Gold Cup appearance, the Guyana national team has navigated decades of regional competition, political shifts, and even FIFA interventions to find its place in North American football.

The history of the Guyana national football team is deeply intertwined with the nation's political evolution. Before gaining independence in 1966, the team competed as British Guiana. Their first international match occurred on 21 July 1905, resulting in a 4–1 defeat against Trinidad and Tobago. Following independence, the team transitioned into competing for the CONCACAF Championship, starting with the 1971 qualifiers against Suriname. The squad's regional presence is bolstered by membership in the Caribbean Zone's CFU. They also secured a fourth-place finish during the 1991 Caribbean Cup.

The team's trajectory has been marked by significant highs and administrative struggles. A remarkable period occurred in 2006, when Guyana achieved eleven successive wins, including five CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifiers. This surge propelled them up 87 spots in the FIFA World Rankings, placing them 12th in CONCACAF and making them a third-ranked seed in the World Cup qualifying draw. However, the 2000s also saw a FIFA suspension that prevented participation in the 2002 World Cup qualifiers. The side also enjoyed success in the Martinez Shield, claiming titles in 1929, 1931, and 1932. Their 2011 campaign saw them advance to the third round of World Cup qualifying after defeating Trinidad and Tobago.

In recent years, the team has faced structural challenges, including a period where FIFA removed the Guyana Football Federation executive in 2014 due to inactivity. Despite these hurdles, the team achieved a milestone by qualifying for the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the first time in 2019. Since then, they have competed in the CONCACAF Nations League, experiencing both promotion to League A and subsequent relegation, as they continue to establish their presence in the region. The team's recent history includes a 2025 Gold Cup qualifying campaign that ended in a preliminary defeat against Guatemala. They have also participated in various editions of the CONCACAF Nations League.
