From mechanical engineering student to reality television champion, the versatile path of Ha Seok-jin.
In short: Born in 1982, South Korean actor Ha Seok-jin initially pursued a degree in mechanical engineering before a chance encounter with an entertainment industry contact shifted his trajectory. What began as a reluctant experiment in a 2005 commercial evolved into a prolific career spanning television dramas and high-stakes reality competition success.
Ha Seok-jin’s journey into the spotlight was far from linear. Raised in Seoul, he was deep into his mechanical engineering studies at Hanyang University when he paused his education to fulfill his mandatory military service as a Combat Police officer. Upon completing his service in 2002, he returned to campus with no intention of entering show business. It was only after a friend working in production persistently encouraged him to explore acting that he reconsidered his path. Despite his initial hesitation, his debut in a 2005 Korean Air advertisement sparked an unexpected interest in the craft, eventually leading him to prioritize acting over his original academic pursuits.
Over the following decades, Ha established himself as a recognizable figure in South Korean television. He gained significant prominence through his performances in various drama series, including Shark in 2013, 4 Legendary Witches in 2014, Drinking Solo in 2016, and Radiant Office in 2017. His work during this period earned him multiple nominations for excellence awards at major industry ceremonies, such as the MBC Drama Awards and the APAN Star Awards. These roles solidified his reputation as a versatile performer capable of navigating diverse narrative tones.
Ha’s career has also been marked by strategic shifts in his professional management. After a tenure with C-JeS Entertainment that began in April 2019, he moved to Management Koo in July 2021 following the expiration of his previous contract. Beyond scripted drama, he demonstrated his analytical and competitive capabilities in September 2023 by participating in the Netflix reality game show The Devil's Plan. Competing against eleven other celebrities, Ha emerged as the ultimate winner of the contest, proving that his background in engineering may have provided a unique edge in the high-pressure environment of the show.
