From reality television to Tamil cinema, the versatile career of actor Harish Kalyan
In short: Born in 1990, Harish Kalyan has evolved from a debutant in 2010 to a recognized name in Tamil cinema. Beyond his acting success in films like Poriyaalan and Pyaar Prema Kaadhal, he has navigated reality television, independent music production, and a diverse range of roles that challenge his boy-next-door image.
Harish Kalyan entered the film industry in 2010 with the movie Sindhu Samaveli. His early career was marked by a series of films that struggled to find commercial success or critical acclaim, including Aridhu Aridhu and Sattapadi Kutram. However, his breakthrough arrived in 2014 with the thriller Poriyaalan, where he played a young civil engineer. This role earned him his first positive critical reception and paved the way for more significant opportunities, such as his performance in the 2016 film Vil Ambu, which featured his real-life father, Five Star Kalyan, in a supporting role.
A major turning point in Kalyan's public profile occurred in 2017 when he participated in the first season of the Tamil reality show Bigg Boss. Joining on day 53, he finished as the second runner-up. This exposure helped propel his career, leading to his lead role in the 2018 romantic comedy Pyaar Prema Kaadhal. Critics lauded his ability to portray a naive IT worker with ease, noting his natural flair for comedy. He subsequently sought to break his established image by taking on more complex, rugged roles, such as the aggressive character in the 2019 film Ispade Rajavum Idhaya Raniyum, for which he underwent physical changes including gaining weight and growing a beard.
Kalyan's filmography reflects a willingness to experiment with various genres, ranging from the superstitious lead in Dhanusu Raasi Neyargale to the lead in Dharala Prabhu, a Tamil adaptation of the Hindi film Vicky Donor. His creative interests extend beyond acting; he is trained in Hindustani music and plays the keyboard. He has also contributed to the music industry as a singer and lyricist, notably releasing the independent track I'm Single in 2016. Married to Narmada Udayakumar since October 2022, Kalyan continues to be a prominent figure in the industry, having received the Edison Awards three times throughout his career.
