The 6 foot 8 wide receiver who redefined NFL scale
In short: Picture an athlete of such height that he might potentially launch a football across the entire length of the field. Harold Carmichael didn't just break the mold of the wide receiver; he redefined the physical limits of the position, becoming a towering icon of the Philadelphia Eagles' golden era.
At 6 feet 8 inches, Harold Carmichael stands as one of the tallest players in NFL history to ever record a touchdown pass, a feat shared only with Dan McGwire. This immense stature allowed him to dominate the field, but his journey to the pros was unconventional. A multi-sport athlete at Southern University, he walked on as a basketball center, a track and field javelin thrower, and a discus tosser before finding his niche as a wide receiver.
Carmichael's professional trajectory began in 1971 when the Philadelphia Eagles selected him in the seventh round. Initially used as a tight end, he was transitioned to wide receiver in 1973 under head coach Mike McCormack. That year marked a historic breakout; he led the entire league in receptions with 67 and amassed 1,116 yards. His dominance was so consistent that from 1973 to 1983, he led all NFL receivers in receptions, yards, and touchdowns.
His longevity was equally remarkable. In 1980, he set an NFL record by catching passes in 127 consecutive games. By the time he retired in 1984, he held every major receiving record for the Eagles, including 590 receptions for 8,985 yards and 79 touchdowns. These records remained untouched as of early 2017. His legacy was cemented in 2020 when he was officially inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Beyond the stats, Carmichael served as a bridge between the locker room and the front office. From 1998 to 2015, he held various leadership roles for the Eagles, acting as a mentor and liaison. Today, he remains a symbol of the era where size met skill, proving that 'brain food' for football history includes understanding how physical outliers can reshape the mechanics of a game.
